December at St. Thomas

December is a full month for our church family! The Season of Advent begins on Sunday, 12/1. During the Advent Season we have several special services and opportunities to serve our community. Learn more about all of the opportunities on our website.

Christmas Eve at St. Thomas

This year we will have 2 services on Christmas Eve at 4 PM and 8 PM. Both services will be the same in content and style, however our 4:00 PM service will utilize battery powered candles instead of wax. Our services will be in our normal location - The Foundry Street Building (130 Foundry St. Athens, GA). Parking is available nearby in the Classic Center Parking Deck.

  • Our 4:00 PM service will be family worship and include children of all ages. However, there will be nursery available for babies and toddlers.

  • Our 8:00 PM service will be a traditional candlelight service that concludes around 9:30 PM. There will be no childcare or nursery provided so that our volunteers and staff members can attend.

Vision

A Vibrant, Disciple-Making, Liturgical Church in Athens

Gospel Incarnation. Gospel Proclamation. Gospel Demonstration.

The Gospel is the announcement that Jesus is Lord. It is deep, rich, and beautiful. It has cosmic implications and is intensely personal. As Tim Keller says, “you are more sinful and flawed than you ever dared believe, but more accepted and loved than you ever dared hope” because of the finished work of Christ on the Cross and his mighty resurrection through which all things are being made new and we are brought back into relationship with our Triune God. Through the Sacraments of the Church and the work of the Holy Spirit, the worshipping community is shaped into the image of Christ and sent on mission into the midst of a skeptical culture in need of the Gospel being faithfully embodied, clearly proclaimed, and joyfully demonstrated.

Anglican Church Planting

Anglican churches are uniquely equipped for ministry in an increasingly post-Christian and complex context like Athens. Our ancient-future faith has an ideal character as being accessible and engaging to culture, while being distinct enough to call it away to something scandalously better - new life in Christ. We want to reach the next generation of leaders, creatives, students, professionals, and families. Our community is a multi-generational collection of people following King Jesus. Empowered by the Spirit, we joyfully do the work that God has given us to do. As a church plant, we have grown into a member parish of the Anglican Diocese of the South. Now we are a young, growing church that still has a heart for church planting - for seeing new people reached, new churches started, and raising up new leaders for this work.

Athens is booming, why not the Church?

Athens is considered an intellectual and cultural center for the state of Georgia. This highly-educated, diverse area is booming with young professionals, families and college students; music and arts; new businesses and homes. Over 150,000 people reside in the Athens area including over 30,000 college students. Despite all of this growth less than 35% of the population is strongly involved in the Christian faith. As the city continues to increase in size and influence, we have a vision to build for the kingdom of God by making disciples of all ages and inviting the next generation into a mature, adult faith.

Pray that the Gospel will be embodied, proclaimed, and demonstrated, especially through St. Thomas Anglican Church.

"Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth: Set up your kingdom in our midst. Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God: Have mercy on me, a sinner. Holy Spirit, breath of the living God: Renew me and all the world."

Ancient Prayer adapted and updated by Bishop N. T. Wright

Give

We invite you to support St. Thomas!

As a young church, the bulk of our support comes from the generosity of our members and regular attenders.

We also have several partner churches and benefactors that continue to support us as we grow and become more established.

Thank you for your generosity!
